Westby coffee shop making the most of construction

Daily Brew Co. creates drinks inspired by Hwy 27/14 commotion

In an effort to have a little fun with the re-construction project along the highway in Westby, Kassi Olerud thought of a delicious way for customers to commemorate the struggle.

And so, the ‘Road Construction’ flight was born.

“I like to do a different flight every season and thought ‘well this is a cool way to have fun with the construction’,” said Kassi.

A flight in drinking terms is a variety of small samples of different flavors. At Daily Brew Co., their beverage flights come in four eight-ounce glasses with your choice between four coffee or espresso-based drinks and four lotus tea-based drinks.

The aptly-named drink choices for the construction sampler include: Rocky Road Mocha, Road Crew Cold Brew, One Lane Latte, Bulldozer Breve, Orange ‘Cone’sicle, Peach Ring Pothole, Blue Raspberry Roundabout, and Road Rage Lemonade.

Kassi and her husband Garrick Olerud own the Daily Brew Co. in Westby. They opened their doors in June 2021. So far, they haven’t had much disruption with the road construction.

“We’re on the side of the road that isn’t super torn up,” said Kassi. “So, we haven’t been affected much, yet. Once they start tearing up the West side of the street it may have bigger impact on our business.”

Besides the coffee, espresso, and lotus options, they also have matcha and chai teas, smoothies, hot cocoa, malts, and Italian sodas.

Daily Brew Co. also offers breakfast and lunch on top of the beverage combinations. Most of the options are sandwiches – breakfast sandwiches, chicken salad on croissant, ham and cheddar, and of course – burgers. Wednesday nights, they donate $2 to an organization for every burger purchased. Yogurt parfaits, breakfast bowls, and salads are also on the menu, with some items on the ‘specials’ board like egg bites and reubens.

Inside the shop, there is a selection of merchandise from drinkware and hats to locally-made products, like Cashton-based LoLarLay Lavender items.

The construction drink flight was introduced to the public on May 28 – just before bi-directional traffic was ceased through downtown Westby. Two-way traffic is intended to start soon, originally slated for August 31. And with the end of summer near, a new seasonal set of drinks will be available – with a creative autumn-themed taste.

“Our construction flight will be available until our fall flight releases,” said Kassi. “Prepare for some favorite fall flavors featuring pumpkin, caramel apple, and maple.”

Daily Brew Co. is located just south of the future roundabout at the intersection of highways 14 and 27, at 100 Washington St., Westby.

They are open 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. On Wednesday and Fridays, hours are 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. For the weekend, they’re open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

“Going into construction season, we decided we weren’t going to change our hours,” said Kassi. “We’ve stayed positive and optimistic throughout.”
